Jazz – Jazz dancing is a form of dance that showcases a dancer's individual style and originality. It is energetic and fun, consisting of unique moves, fancy footwork, big leaps and quick turns. To excel in jazz, dancers need a strong background in ballet, as it encourages grace and balance.
Lyrical – Lyrical is a dance style that blends ballet and jazz dance techniques with choreography that strives to interpret the story and emotions of the music. It is a passionate, expressive dance style in which the dancer attempts to convey strong emotions such as love, joy, despair and anger through movement and facial expressions.
Contemporary – Contemporary dance is a collection of systems and methods developed from modern and postmodern dance. Contemporary dance principles include: centering, alignment, gravity, breath, contraction, release, fall and recovery, suspension, balance and off-balance, tension and relaxation, opposition and emotion.
Hip Hop – Hip Hop dance refers to mainly street dance styles, danced to hip hop music. It includes a wide range of styles such as breaking, popping, locking, krumping, old school hip hop and freestyle.
Tap – Tap dance was developed in the United States during the nineteenth century and is popular in many parts of the world. The name comes from the tapping sound made with the small metal plates on the dancer’s shoes touch a hard surface. This lively, rhythmic tapping makes the performer not just a dancer but also a percussive musician.
Flamenco – Flamenco is a Spanish term that refers both to a musical genre, known for its intricate rapid passages and as a dance genre characterized by its audible footwork. Flamenco embodies a complex musical and cultural tradition.
Ballroom – Ballroom dance refers to a set of partner dances historically known for recreation. However, the term has become much narrower in scope usually referring specifically to the International Standard and International Latin style dances. In the United States, two additional variations – “American Smooth” and “American Rhythm” have also been popularized and are commonly recognized styles of Ballroom Dance.
Pilates – Pilates is a physical fitness system that focuses on the core postural muscles which help keep the body balanced and which are essential to providing support for the spine. Pilates exercises teach awareness of breath and alignment of the spine and aim to strengthen the deep torso muscles.
