Arizona Dance Theatre is a community dance company comprised of Tucson youth and college dancers under the direction of its founder, Kandis Meinel. The company was established in 2002 as an Arizona non-profit organization, and federally recognized 501C-3 non-profit corporation under the name Dance Magnificat. As of March 2009, the company’s named changed to Arizona Dance Theatre and was officially recognized by the Arizona Corporation Commission. The change in name came about from a strong desire to represent the community in which we live, perform, and receive individual, cooperate and government funding. Dancers are selected as members by invitation and through auditions. Company members along with guest artists perform at home and in the greater Phoenix area. The repertoire encompasses a variety of dance styles: classical ballet, jazz, lyric/contemporary, hip hop and tap. Arizona Dance Theatre participates in city and state-wide collaborative dance productions, regional dance competitions and seasonal concerts including The NutCracker Ballet. This performing company is supported by the generous efforts of volunteers. The Tucson Pima Arts Council and donations from our community. Arizona Dance Theatre is directed by Kandis Meinel.

CRITERIA FOR DANCING WITH ARIZONA DANCE THEATRE Any individual from the community may participate in an annual summer concert produced by Arizona Dance Theatre. The criteria for participation includes: enrollment in a technique class at Creative Dance Arts, the official school for this company. Consistency in class attendance, participation in rehearsals at the theatre, a costume fee/class and one performance fee is required by every student opting to perform in Arizona Dance Theatre's annual summer concert. Any individual from the community who would like to have the opportunity of performing more than once a year, may either be invited or request to be considered for membership in Arizona Dance Theatre. These dancers must demonstrate their technical ability, musicality, showmanship, preparedness for class/rehearsal, personal discipline and motivation, a positive attitude and behavior within the classroom, during rehearsals and in the community. The dancers who meet these standards and criteria set forth by the Artistic Director are selected to participate in the activities of the company on a pre-professional level. Dancers are sent an invitation to attend a placement session and general meeting. Based on age and experience, dancers are placed in one of three divisions: Children’s Group, Youth Group, Teen/Adult Group. Dancers and their parents must acknowledge their acceptance by submitting a signed contract which details their responsibilities and commitments of time, finances and personal behavior. If any of the stipulated requirements are not met, the dancer is given a verbal and written warning; subsequent disregard and non-compliance will be followed by dismissal from the company.
Upcoming Performances for the 2009-2010 Year In the past, each of these company events have proven to be opportuinities to learn to work as a team toward a goal while having fun. We have provided as much information as possible with estimated costs for each event so you can decide how many companies in which you will participate. These events are mandatory for the assigned companies, so mark your calenders and plan ahead! THESE DATES ARE TENTATIVE! Any High School Showcase that we can particiipate in, we will, dates TBA!
